Writing

We follow a mastery approach to English through the Pathways to Write programme. Using high-quality, vocabulary-rich texts as the foundation for learning, children are provided with engaging and purposeful opportunities to write across a range of genres. Each unit is carefully structured to build knowledge and skills progressively, with key writing techniques revisited and practised throughout. This cumulative approach helps children develop confidence and fluency, enabling them to apply their learning independently across a variety of writing contexts.

Every unit is centred around a carefully chosen text that inspires and motivates learning. Children immerse themselves in the text through reading, discussion, drama and the exploration of language before developing the skills needed to create their own pieces of writing. This approach not only nurtures creativity but also helps pupils gain a secure understanding of the structure, purpose and audience of different text types.

Vocabulary development is a key feature of the programme. Through rich discussion, explicit vocabulary teaching and close engagement with high-quality texts, children broaden their understanding of language and learn how to use it effectively in their own writing. This builds on the extensive work we do across the school to develop a rich and varied vocabulary, supporting children to become confident and articulate communicators.

Throughout their learning journey, pupils engage in a range of activities that help them:

Pathways to Write follows a clear and progressive sequence of learning, enabling children to deepen their understanding and build upon prior knowledge over time. Opportunities for discussion, modelled writing, shared writing and independent application ensure that all pupils are both supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.

By immersing children in high-quality literature and providing meaningful, purposeful writing opportunities, we aim to foster enthusiastic and confident writers who can communicate their ideas effectively, creatively and accurately across the curriculum and beyond.
