Spelling

We believe that strong spelling skills are essential in helping children to become confident and effective writers. Accurate spelling supports clear communication, enables pupils to write with greater fluency and helps them to develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary and language patterns.

To support the teaching and learning of spelling, we use Spelling Shed across the school. Spelling Shed provides a structured and progressive approach to spelling, based on the National Curriculum and the latest research into how children learn to spell. Through carefully planned lessons, pupils explore spelling patterns, rules, phonics, morphology (word structure) and etymology (word origins), helping them to develop a secure understanding of how words are constructed.

Alongside weekly spelling lessons, children have opportunities to practise and consolidate their learning through the engaging Spelling Shed platform. Interactive games, activities and personalised practice help to motivate pupils while developing confidence and accuracy in their spelling. The platform also enables children to revisit previous learning and apply their spelling knowledge in a fun and meaningful way.

By developing a curiosity about words and a secure understanding of spelling patterns, we aim to equip all pupils with the skills they need to become confident, independent writers.
