My Future

We are delighted to be part of an exciting initiative called My Future, which is currently being rolled out across Essex. We are especially proud to share that we are the first school in Brentwood to be given the opportunity to participate in this project, with the hope that it will expand further across the area in the next academic year.

My Future is designed to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and broaden children’s horizons by introducing them to a wide range of careers and industries from an early age. Each half-term, the project focuses on a different industry theme, ensuring that children do not repeatedly encounter the same type of job. Instead, they are introduced to a new sector and new roles every half-term.

This carefully planned approach means that throughout their time on the programmeand by the time they leave school in Year 6children will have been exposed to a rich and varied range of careers, roles and job opportunities. The aim is for every child to build a broad understanding of the many pathways available to them, rather than forming narrow or stereotypical views of work.

Each industry theme highlights the wide variety of jobs within that sector. For example, a Construction theme may introduce roles such as architects, engineers, surveyors, site managers, electricians, plumbers, designers, and project planners, helping children understand that industries include many different pathways and skills. Across the programme, children will explore themes including construction, healthcare, engineering, technology, creative industries, education, science, business, emergency services and environmental sectors.

As part of the project, pupils will take part in engaging virtual sessions with career professionals. These sessions are carefully tailored for different age groupsYears 1, 2 and 3 and Years 4, 5 and 6ensuring the content is age-appropriate. Children will join half-termly Zoom meetings where they take part in a fun warm-up activity revealed in the Golden Envelope before meeting the career professional. They will hear about the volunteers job and life experiences and will have the opportunity to ask questions.

During each session, the focus is on developing one key essential skill linked to the featured industry. Volunteers highlight this skill during their job “reveal,” helping children understand the importance of transferable skills in the world of work.

Did you know?

Research shows that the difference between children’s career aspirations from the age of 7 to 17 is minimal. These aspirations are often influenced by gender stereotypes, socio-economic background and media such as television, film and radio. We believe it is essential that children are exposed early to the wide range of opportunities available to them, so they can imagine ambitious and inclusive futures for themselves.

We are confident that this project will be an inspiring and valuable experience for our pupils, encouraging curiosity, confidence, and positive aspirations for the future.

Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
